25th Anniversary “Two Theatres – Sopot 2026” Festival
From 19 to 22 June 2026, Sopot will host lovers of Television Theatre and Polish Radio Theatre for the twenty-fifth time. Audiences can look forward to four days of free competition performances, live radio plays, and meetings with some of Poland’s most distinguished theatre creators.
For four days, the former Multikino cinema in Sopot will offer audiences free access to competition productions from Television Theatre as well as Polish Radio plays competing this year for the Grand Prix and a number of other awards, including the Audience Award. All competition entries are carefully selected and represent the most artistically compelling productions of the past season. The festival will also feature accompanying events, including meetings with actors, actresses, and theatre creators, discussions, and a multimedia exhibition.
“This is a unique anniversary edition of a festival that was born in Sopot and has now returned to Sopot. The festival opens up cinema halls, the Wybrzeże Theatre, Atelier Club, the Crooked House, and many other venues for the people of Sopot — places where audiences can listen, watch, meet, talk, and ‘experience’ the power of thoughtful and meaningful words, something that is sometimes sorely lacking in public debate today. Let us create space in Sopot for good and wise words,” says Magdalena Czarzyńska-Jachim, Mayor of Sopot.
The jubilee 25th edition will also commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth and the 10th anniversary of the death of Andrzej Wajda. Special screenings of selected Television Theatre productions and a discussion devoted to Wajda’s television work have been prepared for the occasion. In addition, a multimedia exhibition will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the KOBRA Sensation Theatre. As every year, the festival will present the Grand Awards of the “Two Theatres” Festival, granted annually for outstanding performances and lifetime achievements in Polish Television Theatre and Polish Radio Theatre. This year’s recipients are Andrzej Seweryn and Danuta Stenka, while the festival’s Special Awards will be presented to Laco Adamik and Witold Giersz. The winners of the “Absent Narratives” television screenplay competition will also be announced during the festival.
The anniversary edition makes this year’s programme exceptionally rich, offering audiences more television theatre productions and radio plays than ever before.“This year we produced as many as 31 premieres for Television Theatre. Selecting the productions for the competition was quite a challenge. We wanted to present plays that engage in dialogue with reality while also providing excellent entertainment. In the end, we selected 19 productions, slightly more than half of which are original works,” says Michał Kotański, Director of Television Theatre.
“Polish Radio will present 16 out of 34 submitted radio plays. Inspired by the experiences of previous editions, we are reaching out to audiences even more directly. Live radio plays have become extremely popular, and this year there will be even more of them at the festival. There will also be meetings with stars, discussions, listening sessions — everything that brings us together around meaning and the spoken word,” says Adam Wojtyszko, Director of Polish Radio Theatre.
To mark the 25th anniversary of “Two Theatres,” Polish Radio has also prepared a special series of radio plays entitled The Wave of Time. These thirty-minute one-act productions, written by acclaimed Polish playwrights, will be presented with star-studded casts at the Atelier Theatre. In addition, audiences will be able to experience a live radio play based on the works of Wiesław Myśliwski, as well as a radio drama written by Sylwia Chutnik.
The 25th “Two Theatres” Festival will not only provide an opportunity for reflection and celebration, but also for looking ahead and discussing how television theatre and radio theatre continue to evolve. The special programme will feature outstanding personalities, the most important premieres of the past season, as well as archival productions and rarely screened performances.
The “Two Theatres” Festival is the largest annual celebration of television and radio theatre in Poland and one of the country’s most important cultural events. Established in 2001, it is jointly organised by Polish Television and Polish Radio. After a three-year hiatus, “Two Theatres” returned to Sopot in 2024, the city where the festival was originally created. Since its inception, the festival has remained open to the public, with free admission to all screenings, presentations, and meetings.
